In the past few years, Cheryl L. Yeatts, Manager of the Sedona Public Library in the Village, AZ noticed a decidedly increase in book clubs and interest in book clubs in her library. So, in 2017 she attended an ALA Annual Conference Session in Chicago about Book Clubs, organized by United for Libraries and Book Club Central. One of the many take-aways for her was the idea of organizing a special event for book clubs in her community and she went home inspired to look into this. Nine months later Cheryl applied for and was selected to receive a cash grant in support of the programming of the recent The Great American Read developed by ALA and PBS. She was the only winner from Arizona and she was excited!
The Book Club Mixer was now on the library calendar and it would combine best practices and ideas for book clubs along with celebrating the Great American Read.
She marketed this event via the normal channels in her city and hoped that word would spread among the active book clubs in the area. Little did she know that this free October 2018 event would ultimately be a standing room only program!
Cheryl used some of her funding to provide refreshments for the 100 + in attendance.
During the event, the audience previewed episode 4 of the PBS series, entitled “Heroes.” Dr. Ingrid Broszeit-Rieger, a retired literature professor with book club experience, spoke on exploring why we are drawn to books with heroic characters and how they bring us comfort, hope, and inspiration. There were also several break-outs scheduled for book clubs to circulate, discuss questions that were given to them and even opportunities to join one of the many book clubs from the Verde Valley that were represented.
Robin Hoklotubbe, Book Club Central Project Manager, spoke about Book Club Central and all the many resources available and even shared some tips from her own experience with her book club. Copies of the fall SJP pick She Would Be King by Wayetu Moore were won by 3 lucky ladies.
There were many other door prizes given away and readinggroupchoices.com donated copies of their 2018 and 2019 Book Recommendations publication for all attendees.
Congratulations to Cheryl Yeatts and the Sedona Public Library for such a successful Book Club Event!
